The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world. The Society represents 94% of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the U.S.and is a leading authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

ASPS’s mission is to advance quality care to plastic surgery patients by encouraging high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in plastic surgery. The Society advocates for patient safety and requires its members to operate in accredited surgical facilities.

 

What Is Board-Certification in Plastic Surgery?

Choosing a plastic surgeon you can trust begins with making sure your surgeon is board certified. Requirements for membership include:

  • Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery® (ABPS)
  • Complete at least six years of surgical training following medical school with a minimum of three years of plastic surgery residency training
  • Pass comprehensive oral and written exams
  • Graduate from an accredited medical school
  • Complete continuing medical education, including patient safety each year
  • Perform surgery in accredited, state-licensed, or Medicare-certified surgical facilities
  • Adheres to a strict Code of Ethics
